What is a Sensory Bin?
A Sensory Bin is a plastic container, box, or sensory table that is filled items that stimulate the senses and encourage imaginative play.
Most sensory bins have a base filler to scoop, stir, or pour like dry corn, white rice, beans, kinetic sand, or water.
Many sensory bins have a theme like Farm, Christmas, or Winter.
Benefits of Sensory Play
According to Good Start Learning, some of the incredible benefits of sensory bins are:
- It helps with language skills and problem solving skills.

There’s so many amazing reasons to do sensory activities. To me, as a mom of 4, the best reason of all is that sensory play is so much fun that it has provided hours upon hours of pretend play for my kids!

How to make an Easy Gingerbread Sensory Bin
Let’s get starting making our Christmas Gingerbread sensory bin!
First, fill your large sensory bin with green split peas. Next, add the Christmas Gingerbread House pieces and candy stickers.
You can either let the stickers dry out by removing the backing several days in advance, or you can stick them to paper and cut them out.
Then I added various Christmas colored pom poms. You might like to get sparkly ones or use different colors. I also included some candy cane striped chenille stems that I cut in half and twisted into a candy cane shape.
Last, I added some tongs and wooden scoops for scooping, pouring, and imaginative play.
My kids LOVED this Christmas sensory bin.
They loved playing with the gingerbread men and decorating the gingerbread houses. This is such a great way for kids to build their hand-eye coordination and be creative!
