Looking for a fun Mother’s Day Activity? This Mother’s Day Candle Craft for Kids is so cute and makes a great gift for mom or grandma!
This cool technique is an easy way to personalize a candle.
It’s perfect for older kids as well as teens.
Keep in mind that this project does require significant amounts of adult help, from permanent marker supervision to heating the wax paper to adhere the picture to the candle. (Meaning, it’s a better craft for a small group of kids rather than a classroom full of children.)
That said, all you need are a few simple supplies to create a fun personalized candle for Mother’s Day!

Supplies Needed for DIY Custom Candle
For this DIY candle craft you will need the following:
- White Pillar Candle
- Sharpies – In lots of different colors
- White Tissue paper
- Wax Paper
- Hair Dryer
Once you have your supplies gathered, it’s time to make your personalized artwork candles!
How to Make Customize Candles
First, cut the tissue paper smaller than the size of your candle. I did this project twice and it was MUCH easier to adhere the tissue paper when I wasn’t trying to cover the entire side of the candle.
I’d advise you to aim for covering the middle of the candle and cut off a bit from the ends where the tissue paper meets so that it can properly adhere to the candle.
Then provide your child with Sharpies to decorate the tissue paper.
Be sure to place a table cloth on the table along with some extra paper underneath to catch the bleeding of the markers. We used cardstock to soak up some of the marker.
Allow the kids to decorate the tissue paper however they wish. It’s nice if they have an idea ahead of time.
You might encourage them to draw flowers, decorate with Grandma or Mom’s name, or draw a picture of her.
How to Add the Artwork to the Candle
Next, wrap the decorated piece of tissue paper tightly around the candle to prevent wrinkles.
Add a piece of wax paper around the outside to keep everything in place. This wax paper doesn’t need to be perfectly cut to size – we will remove it at the end – it’s purpose to to add wax!
Here’s the important part: Make sure you place the waxy side of the wax paper facing the tissue paper. If you don’t – the wax won’t melt onto the tissue and it won’t stick!
Not sure which side is the waxy one? Simply use your fingernail to scrape some wax off the paper. If you can – you found the wax side!
Hold your candle papers tightly together. Turn on the hair blow dryer and heat the tissue paper with the wax paper on top. You’ll need to work your way around the candle to adhere the whole piece.
This sounds simple, but it gets a little windy and hot – so I’d advise adult help for younger kids.
Your candle will start to look glossy as the wax on the wax paper melts and tissue paper sticks to the candle. Heat the outside of the candle until the entire picture is attached to the whole candle. Remove the wax paper and discard it.
Your DIY Candle for Mother’s Day is done!
Too cute! I hope this DIY candle makes the perfect Mother’s Day Craft for your child!
