Alright, let’s dive in!
Story of David and Goliath – Part 1
David was the youngest of the 8 sons of Jesse. His 3 oldest brothers went off to war with King Saul to fight the Philistines.
David took care of his father’s flock of sheep in Bethlehem. He traveled back and forth to play music for King Saul.
The Philistines had a champion named Goliath. He was HUGE. Goliath was about 9 feet and 9 inches tall.
He wore a bronze helmet on his head, a bronze coat of armor that weighed 125 pounds, and bronze armor plating on his legs as well.
He also had a javelin slung to his back and a spear with an iron point that that weighed 15 pounds.
Goliath shouted to the army of Israel, “Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 1 Samuel 17: 8-9
This terrified King Saul and his army.
For 40 days, Goliath came forward every morning and evening to defy Israel.
Story of David and Goliath Part 2
One day David’s father told him to go and check on his brothers at war and bring them supplies. When David arrived at the army camp, he saw Goliath come out to make fun of God’s army.
David asked what would be done about this and who was this Philistine who was defying the armies of the living God.
David went to King Saul and told him to not lose heart, that he would go out to fight Goliath. King Saul told David that he was too small…He was a young man and Goliath is a warrior.
But David told Saul that as a shepherd taking care of his father’s sheep, he has killed both a lion and a bear to rescue his sheep.
David told Saul that the Lord who rescued him from the lion and the bear will rescue him from the hand of Goliath.
Saul told David to “Go, and the Lord be with you.” 1 Samuel 17:37
Story of David and Goliath Part 3
King Saul gave David his own tunic, a coat of armor, and a bronze helmet for his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around because he was not used to wearing these things.
David took them off because he was not used to them. They were too big.
Instead he went to a steam and chose 5 smooth stones and put them in his shepherd bag. With his sling in his hand, he went out to fight the Philistine giant Goliath.
When Goliath saw David coming out to fight him, he made fun of David saying “Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks?”
David responded, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands….the whole world will know there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” 1 Samuel 17:45-47
As Goliath came closer to attack, David reached into his bag and took out a stone and using his sling, he slung it and struck Goliath in the forehead and he fell facedown dead.
David won the battle against Goliath with a sling and a stone! When the other Philistines saw that Goliath was dead, they ran away in fear.
I hope this synopsis was helpful. This is a kid-friendly version – no cutting off the head mentioned. For the full story, you can check out 1 Samuel 17.
