Supplies for this Yarn Wrapped Shamrock Craft:
For this simple shamrock art project, you will need the following craft supplies:
– Thin Cardboard – I recommend using a cereal box or other cardboard from your recycle bin.
– Scissors – strong enough to cut thin cardboard. I recommend Fiskars brand.
– Pencil
– Yarn – any shade of green will work! We used yarn from a local store, but you can find some similiar multicolored green yarn here.
– Scotch tape or masking tape
-Free Shamrock Template (Found at the end of this article). It is easiest to trace if you print it on card stock.
How to Make a Yarn Shamrock
First, print our your shamrock shape template. There is both a large shamrock and a smaller shamrock to choose from. Cut out the shamrock you like the best.
Place the shamrock template on top of your thin cardboard and trace around the shamrock shape. Cut out the shamrock that you just traced.
Tape the beginning of your yarn to the back of your cardboard shamrock.
Now, wrap yarn around the shamrock.
Be sure that the yarn is tight and secure on the shamrock. If you get too close to the edges, it can definitely slide off. You can use glue or tape on the back to secure things a bit more.
Once you are finished adding yarn, use a small dot of glue or tape to secure the ends of the yarn.
And….that’s it! An easy shamrock craft idea for kids!
You can see in the picture above, the difference between using a lot of yarn or letting a little bit of cardboard show through. Both are cute in their own way!
This craft is a fun way to practice fine motor skills. I would recommend doing it with a small group of children to keep things going smoothly.
These shamrocks are adorable decorations for a table centerpiece, or they would be super cute displayed on a class bulletin board. What fun!
