Need a super easy craft for the holiday season? This Christmas Wreath Ornament Craft for kids is perfect!
As we decorate our Christmas tree each year, some of my favorite ornaments are the ones that my kids made at school – and specifically, the ones that include their sweet photo.
It’s pure joy to see their pictures over the years on these Christmas decorations.
This Wreath Ornament is a simple craft that doesn’t require a lot of drying time, and it’s such a cute keepsake for families!
It works well as a fun craft for the classroom Christmas party at school or an easy DIY Christmas gift that kids can make.

Supplies for Wreath Ornament Craft
For these Christmas wreath ornaments you will need the following craft supplies:
- Circle Photo Frame Ornaments – I got mine locally from Hobby Lobby, but Amazon has them as well.
- Picture of child
- Green Felt
- Ribbon – You can use any 3/8 inch ribbon – I love the buffalo print!
- Fabric Scissors and regular scissors
- 1/2 inch Mini Red Pom Poms
- Elmer’s Glue All
- Optional: plastic sandwich bags to separate out supplies for each child
Once you have your supplies, let’s get started on this Wreath Ornament DIY.
How to Make a DIY Wreath Ornament
First, you will need a picture of your child.
If you are doing it for a classroom craft as a room mom, you’ll want to plan ahead and coordinate a time to go to the school to take pictures of the kids so that you have printed copies ready for the craft.
Next, cut the picture to fit inside of the frame. My ornament frames had a circle of paper inside which made it handy to use as a template to cut the pictures in a perfect circle.
Using fabric scissors, cut small squares or rectangles of green felt. I cut a few thin strips and then chopped smaller pieces off of them.
Have your child glue the felt to the edges of the circle frame to create a green wreath. This is one of those times that they DO want to use plenty of glue to make it stick.
Next using a bit of ribbon, tie a bow. Trim the ends to make it the right size.
Now, have your child glue your red mini pom poms to the wreath. Again, be sure to use plenty of glue, or it might not stick.
Finally, glue the bow onto the bottom of the wreath.
And….your cute Christmas wreath is finished! What an adorable keepsake ornament!
This fun wreath works best for kids 2nd grade and up.
If you do these pom pom wreaths with younger children, you may have trouble with glue puddles, so I would recommend adding the picture after the glue has dried.
Tips for Preparing this Craft for a Classroom Party
As a mom of 4, and a room mom for my kids’ classrooms for many years, I’ve used these easy Christmas wreath crafts for a couple of different classrooms. It’s a great idea for a Christmas craft because you don’t need hot glue or paint.
To make these Christmas wreath ornaments a little easier for a Christmas classroom party, here’s what I did:
- I took a photo of each student, printed it, and cut out to place inside the ornament frame ahead of time.
- I cut the felt squares ahead of time for the kids
- Tie the bows – many kids struggle with this – so to keep things running smoothly, I do this ahead of time.
- Place plenty of felt squares, 3 pom poms, and the bow into individual plastic bags for each kid, so they each have a little ornament making kit.
- Make sure to have a bag of extra pieces in case a child needs an extra piece of felt, pom pom, or a bow gets misplaced.
