Before we get started on this simple craft, there’s a common question we need to answer.

Are Sunflowers Associated with Fall or Summer?

According to Bloom Ranch of Acton, sunflowers usually bloom around July and August. They reach their full vibrancy in the early fall.

The bright yellow color of sunflowers is associated with the sunny days of summer. And as sunflowers continue to bloom into fall, they represent the transition of seasons.

So, sunflowers often represent BOTH summer and fall.

Now it’s time to make the sunflower petals! Pour a small amount of yellow paint onto a paper plate.

Show the kids how to dip the fork into the paint and stamp it onto the sunflower page going around the brown circle.

Encourage kids to print versus paint so that the fork marks show up well.

painting on the green stem and leaves

After the sunflower bloom is completed, provide kids with green paint to create a stem and green leaves for the sunflower.

It’s fun to see the different techniques and effects the kids create with the fork and Q-tips as they create their own beautiful sunflower.
